Description
The new Ruzizi Tented Lodge opening in November 2012 is tucked away in the riverine forest on the edge of Akagera’s largest lake. This small private camp offers seven en-suite tents dotted along the forested lake edge, sheltered by large trees and swaying palms. The tents are spaced either side of a thatched reception area with a lounge, bar and dining room. Each tent is accessible by a wooden boardwalk from the reception. The camp is entirely powered by solar, with a solar hot water system.
Ruzizi Tented Lodge is an eco-friendly accommodation designed for visitors who prefer an intimate safari experience with minimal environmental impact. Operated by Akagera National Park, this lodge is strategically positioned along the forested shoreline of Lake Ihema, providing direct access to one of the park’s most wildlife-rich areas.
The lodge has nine well-appointed safari tents, each featuring en-suite bathrooms, comfortable bedding, and a private deck overlooking the lake. The design prioritises sustainability, with solar power supplying electricity and water heating, while locally sourced materials contribute to a natural aesthetic that blends into the environment. Elevated wooden walkways connect the tents to the main lodge area, which includes a dining space, lounge, and a large fire pit for evening relaxation.
Ruzizi’s location near Lake Ihema enhances the range of activities available to guests. Boat safaris on the lake provide excellent opportunities for observing hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of waterbirds, including African fish eagles, herons, and kingfishers. The lodge is also well-positioned for game drives in the park’s southern sector, where elephants, buffalo, and lions are frequently sighted. Guided nature walks add another dimension to the experience, offering a closer look at the region’s smaller fauna and unique vegetation.
One of Ruzizi’s defining characteristics is its commitment to sustainable tourism. The lodge operates with a low ecological footprint, and some of its revenue supports conservation initiatives and community engagement programs within the park. With a capacity of only 20 guests, Ruzizi ensures a quiet, personalised atmosphere that appeals to those seeking solitude and connection with nature.
Best for Eco-conscious tourists, couples, and small groups looking for a quiet, sustainable lodge with prime access to wildlife.
